Step-by-step
- 1
Set the budget
USA 2026 averages: minor refresh $18–$30K, mid-range remodel $40–$75K, full gut with layout changes $85K+. Hold 15% (20% for pre-1985 homes) as contingency.
- 2
Choose the layout
Preserve or improve the work triangle: sink → cooktop → refrigerator, each leg 4–9 ft, total 12–26 ft. Islands must have 42" clearance on all sides (48" if two cooks work at once).
- 3
Order appliances first
Lead times still run 4–14 weeks. Confirm every model in-hand before ordering cabinets — cutouts are unforgiving.
- 4
Cabinets
Frameless (Euro) construction gives 10–15% more interior storage than face-frame. Soft-close hinges and full-extension drawers are standard, not upgrades, in 2026.
- 5
Countertops
Quartz has won: durable, non-porous, no sealing. Book-matched slabs for waterfall islands. Budget $70–$140/sq ft installed.
- 6
Plumbing and electrical rough-in
This is where DIY ends for most people. Get permits. Add dedicated circuits for microwave, disposal, dishwasher and any island receptacles. Upsize the sink drain to 2" if replacing.
- 7
Backsplash and finish
Backsplash goes on after countertops are templated and installed. Full-height backsplash behind the range looks intentional; the classic 18" strip still works.
