The manual math behind the answer

Block walls are estimated by wall face area, not by volume. Multiply wall length by wall height to get square feet, then subtract any openings for doors, windows or vents that are larger than about 10 ft².

A nominal 8×8×16 in block occupies 8 in × 16 in of wall face once the 3/8 in mortar joint is included — that is 128 in², or 0.89 ft². Dividing 1 by 0.89 gives the familiar shortcut of 1.125 blocks per square foot. A 40 ft × 8 ft wall is 320 ft², so 320 × 1.125 = 360 blocks. Add 5% for breakage and cuts and order 378.

Mortar comes next. One 80 lb bag of mortar mix lays roughly 12 to 14 standard blocks when mixed to a normal consistency with 3/8 in joints. Using the conservative 12, 378 blocks need 32 bags. If you are mixing from portland cement and sand instead, the common Type S recipe is 1 part cement to 3 parts sand by volume, which works out to about 1 cubic foot of damp sand per bag-equivalent of mortar.

Aggregate for core fill is separate again. Each 8 in block has two voids holding about 0.032 ft³ each, so a fully grouted 8 in wall takes roughly 0.064 ft³ per block, or about 1 cubic yard of grout per 420 blocks. Most residential walls only fill the cores containing vertical rebar plus the bond beam, so count those cells rather than the whole wall: cells at 32 in centres in a 40 ft wall means 16 filled cells per course.

Finally, add the base. Block walls sit on a footing, and the footing needs its own concrete volume and gravel bedding. Budget 4–6 in of compacted crushed stone below the footing, and check your local frost depth before setting the footing elevation.
