The manual math behind the answer
Every DIY material question reduces to one of three shapes, and knowing which one you are dealing with is most of the work.
Volume problems cover concrete, gravel, mulch, soil and sand. Multiply length × width × depth in feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards or by the bag yield for bags. The only trap is depth, which is almost always quoted in inches and must be divided by 12 first.
Area problems cover paint, drywall, flooring, tile, roofing and sod. Measure the surface, then divide by the coverage of one unit: 350 ft² per gallon of paint per coat, 32 ft² per 4×8 drywall sheet, 100 ft² per roofing square, and tile area in inches ÷ 144 for square feet per tile. Subtract only large openings; small ones are consumed as cuts.
Count problems cover studs, joists, rafters, rebar, fence posts and deck boards. The formula is always (span ÷ spacing) + 1, because a run of evenly spaced members needs one at each end. Then multiply by the length of each piece to get linear feet, and divide by the stock length to get pieces to buy.
Apply waste last, once, to the final quantity — not to each intermediate step, which compounds it. Then round up to whole purchase units: bags, boxes, sheets, bundles, or the quarter-yard increments ready-mix suppliers sell in. Buying 3.4 boxes of tile is not a thing; buying 4 is.
