1/2" is standard for interior walls on 16" on-center framing. Use 5/8" on ceilings (it sags less) and where a fire-rated assembly is required, such as a garage sharing a wall with the house. Moisture-resistant board belongs in bathrooms.
How much joint compound will I need?
Budget roughly 1 gallon of ready-mixed all-purpose compound per 100–150 sq ft of board for a standard three-coat finish. This calculator uses 1 gallon per 125 sq ft, so a 1,200 sq ft job works out to 10 gallons.
How many screws per sheet?
