Studs = (Wall Length ft × 12 ÷ Spacing in) + 1
Convert the wall length to inches, divide by the on-center spacing, then add one for the closing stud. A 40 ft wall at 16 in OC gives (480 ÷ 16) + 1 = 31 studs before corners and openings.

Counting studs, plates and headers
Wall framing quantities come from three separate counts, and lumping them together is where estimates go wrong. Studs are counted from the on-center spacing. Plates are counted as linear feet — one bottom plate and two top plates on a standard platform-framed wall, so three times the wall length. Headers, cripples, king studs and jack studs are counted per opening, and every window or door adds four to six extra pieces regardless of spacing.
Sixteen inches on center is the American default for load-bearing exterior walls framed with 2×4 or 2×6 stock. Twenty-four inches on center is permitted for many interior non-load-bearing partitions and for advanced-framing exterior walls built with 2×6 studs, and it can cut stud count by about a third. Check your local adopted code before switching, because sheathing thickness, drywall thickness and insulation strategy all interact with spacing.
Nominal size versus actual size
Lumber sold in the United States is labeled by nominal dimensions, not finished ones. A 2×4 measures 1-1/2 by 3-1/2 inches after drying and surfacing. A 2×6 is 1-1/2 by 5-1/2, a 2×8 is 1-1/2 by 7-1/4, a 2×10 is 1-1/2 by 9-1/4, and a 2×12 is 1-1/2 by 11-1/4. Anyone laying out sheathing, drywall or trim from nominal numbers will be off by a half inch per member, and those errors compound across a wall.
Board feet are a volume measure used for hardwoods and bulk orders: thickness in inches × width in inches × length in feet ÷ 12. One board foot equals 144 cubic inches. An eight-foot 2×4 is 5.33 board feet by nominal measure. Framing lumber is normally priced per piece rather than per board foot at retail, but yards quoting large orders often revert to board feet, so it is worth being able to convert both ways.
Lumber prices and buying strategy for 2026
Framing lumber prices in 2026 remain well below the 2021 spike but above pre-2020 levels, with an eight-foot stud-grade 2×4 averaging around $4.25 and a pressure-treated equivalent near $7.50. Precut studs at 92-5/8 inches cost about the same as eight-footers and save a cut on every piece for a standard eight-foot ceiling, which is real labor savings on a large wall.
Order in full bundles where you can, buy the straightest stock for plates and door openings, and expect to cull five to ten percent of a delivered unit for crown, twist or wane. That cull rate is exactly why the 10% waste allowance in the calculator above exists. For pressure-treated sill plates, remember that direct contact with concrete requires treated material and hot-dip galvanized or stainless fasteners.
