The manual math behind the answer

The universal method for an irregular room is decomposition: sketch the floor plan, then draw lines that carve it into simple shapes you already know how to measure. An L-shaped room becomes two rectangles. A room with an angled bay becomes a rectangle plus a triangle. A bow window becomes a rectangle plus a segment of a circle.

Measure and calculate each piece separately. Rectangle area = length × width. Triangle area = (base × height) ÷ 2, where height is measured square to the base, not along the slope. A quarter circle = (π × radius²) ÷ 4. Write each result on your sketch so nothing gets counted twice or missed.

Add the pieces to get the gross floor area, then subtract permanent obstructions that will not be covered: a kitchen island footprint, a hearth, a built-in cabinet run, a stair opening. Do not subtract removable furniture or appliances — flooring usually runs underneath them.

Then add the material allowance, which depends on how the material is installed. Straight-lay plank or tile: 10%. Diagonal or herringbone layouts: 15%. Rooms with many jogs, closets and doorways: up to 15% even for a straight lay, because each jog creates offcuts too short to reuse. Carpet and sheet vinyl are different again — they come in fixed roll widths, so you may buy a lot more square footage than you cover.

Two practical tips. Measure at floor level, not at counter height, and take each dimension twice at opposite ends of the room — walls are rarely parallel, and using the larger of the two readings keeps you from coming up short. And convert inches to decimal feet before multiplying: 12 ft 7 in is 12.583 ft, not 12.7 ft, a mistake that quietly costs a box of flooring on a large room.
