Boxes = (room area × waste factor) ÷ coverage per box, rounded up. The coverage is printed on every carton and varies by plank size and thickness — commonly 18 to 24 ft² for 8 mm and 12 mm laminate. Never assume; two products in the same aisle can differ by 6 ft² per box, which changes the order by a carton or two on an average room.

Take a 14 ft × 18 ft living room: 252 ft². At 10% waste that is 277 ft². If the box covers 20.5 ft², you need 277 ÷ 20.5 = 13.5, so 14 boxes. Buying 14 gives you 287 ft², leaving 35 ft² of margin — about a box and a half of spare planks for mistakes and future repairs.

Get the underlayment right. Many laminates come with a foam pad already attached; adding a second layer under those voids the warranty and makes the floor feel spongy. If your product has no attached pad, buy underlayment for the same square footage as the floor, and add a 6 mil poly vapour barrier over any concrete slab or crawlspace-over floor.

Measure the trim in linear feet, not square feet. You need quarter-round or base shoe around the full room perimeter, minus the door openings, plus a T-moulding at every doorway where laminate meets laminate, a reducer where it meets a lower floor, and a stair nose on any step. These are sold in fixed lengths — usually 78 in or 94 in — so count pieces, not just feet.

Finally, plan the layout before you cut. Run planks parallel to the longest wall or towards the main light source, leave a 1/4 to 3/8 in expansion gap at every wall and fixed object, stagger end joints by at least 12 in, and never finish a row with a piece shorter than about 8 in. Let the boxes acclimatise flat in the room for 48 hours first — skipping that step is the most common cause of buckled laminate.
