1. Quantity formulas
Material calculators use standard trade arithmetic, not proprietary models. Every calculator prints the formula it used along with the values you entered, so any result can be reproduced with a pocket calculator.
- Volume work (concrete, gravel, soil, mulch): length × width × thickness, converted to cubic yards by dividing cubic feet by 27.
- Area work (paint, tile, flooring, drywall, shingles): net area ÷ coverage per unit, rounded up to whole units or packs.
- Linear work (baseboard, decking, fencing, framing): run ÷ on-centre spacing, plus end members where the layout requires them.
- Roofing: footprint area × a pitch multiplier derived from the rise over run you enter, then divided into 33.3 sq ft bundles (3 bundles per square).
2. Waste factors and rounding
Waste allowance is applied after the raw quantity is calculated, and it is always shown separately so you can see the base number and the buffer. Defaults follow common trade practice: roughly 10% for concrete and sheet goods, 10–15% for tile and flooring where cuts and pattern matching increase offcuts, and less for items sold by the exact piece.
Materials sold in fixed units (bags, bundles, boxes, sheets, rolls) are rounded up to the next whole unit, because you cannot buy a partial bag. That rounding means very small projects can show a larger effective waste percentage than the factor you set.
3. Unit conversions
Calculators that support both unit systems convert your input to a single internal unit, run the formula, then convert the result back. The constants we use are exact, not rounded approximations:
- 1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 in = 25.4 mm, 1 sq ft = 0.092903 m².
- 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet = 0.764555 m³.
- 1 US gallon = 3.78541 L; paint coverage is converted per gallon or per litre accordingly.
- 1 lb = 0.453592 kg; bagged material weights (60 lb / 80 lb concrete, 40 lb aggregate) are treated as nominal package sizes.
4. Cost methodology
Cost calculators are built from published national low-to-high price ranges for materials and installed labor, not from a live price feed. They produce a planning range, not a quote, and we present a range rather than a single figure because bid variance on residential work is genuinely wide.
Where a calculator includes or excludes an item — demolition, disposal, permits, contractor markup, finish upgrades — that inclusion is stated on the page. If it is not listed, assume it is excluded.
5. Regional adjustment
Cost tools apply a single state-level adjustment factor to the national range to reflect broad differences in labor and material cost between states. This is a coarse adjustment. It does not capture city-versus-rural differences, local permit fees, union rules, seasonal demand or contractor backlog, all of which can move a real bid more than the state factor does.
We do not claim ZIP-code-accurate pricing, because we do not hold data that would support that claim.
6. Limitations
An online calculator only knows the numbers you type. It cannot see site access, soil conditions, existing structure, hidden damage, code amendments in your jurisdiction, or the quality tier a particular contractor works at.
- Quantity results assume clean rectangular geometry unless the calculator asks for openings or irregular areas.
- Cost results assume typical, non-emergency residential work in reasonable weather.
- Structural outputs are planning estimates only, never an engineered design.
- AI Estimator output is generated by a language model and can be wrong; it must be verified.
7. When to consult a licensed professional
Bring in a qualified professional whenever the work touches life safety, structure or regulated systems: load-bearing walls, beams and headers, foundations, retaining walls above code height limits, roof structure, electrical, gas, plumbing, waterproofing, or anything requiring a permit or inspection.

8. How pages are written and updated
Content is written and checked in-house using documented calculation methods and published reference information. We do not claim third-party engineer or licensed-contractor review, and we do not publish usage statistics, testimonials or partner endorsements we cannot evidence.
Formulas and coverage rates are reviewed when a page is edited. Cost ranges are re-checked periodically and the review month is shown on the page. Where a figure is a rule of thumb or a nominal package size, we say so rather than implying precision we do not have.
