The manual math behind the answer

Mix ratios are volume ratios. In a 1:2:3 mix the six parts add up to one batch, so cement is 1/6 of the batch, sand is 2/6, and gravel is 3/6. Because the dry ingredients pack down and the water fills the voids between them, the mixed concrete comes out to roughly two thirds of the loose dry volume — the standard correction is to multiply your finished volume by about 1.54 before splitting it into parts.

Work an example. You need 1 cubic yard, which is 27 ft³ of finished concrete. Dry volume = 27 × 1.54 = 41.6 ft³. Cement = 41.6 × 1/6 = 6.9 ft³, sand = 13.9 ft³, gravel = 20.8 ft³.

Convert cement from volume to bags: one 94 lb bag of portland cement holds 1 ft³, so 6.9 ft³ is about 7 bags per cubic yard for a 1:2:3 mix. A richer 1:1.5:3 mix pushes that to roughly 8 bags and around 3,500 psi; a leaner 1:3:5 drops to about 5 bags and is only suitable for non-structural fill.

Water is the ingredient that decides strength. A water-to-cement ratio of 0.45 to 0.55 by weight is the practical range — about 5 gallons of water per 94 lb bag at 0.50. Adding extra water to make the mix easier to place is the single most common cause of weak, dusty, crack-prone concrete.

Two field adjustments are worth knowing. Damp sand bulks up in volume by 20–30%, so measure sand by weight if you can or allow for it when batching by bucket. And keep the largest aggregate below one third of the slab thickness and below three quarters of the clear spacing between rebar, or the stone will bridge and leave voids.
