Hands-free construction math is really two problems: getting the numbers in, and trusting what comes out. For input, every modern phone already has dictation built into the keyboard — the microphone key on iOS and Android — and the AI Project Planner accepts free-form spoken sentences, so you can say "twenty by twenty patio, four inches thick, plus a four inch gravel base" and get a complete takeoff without typing a digit.

That works because the planner parses natural language rather than requiring labelled fields. It picks the dimensions out of the sentence, identifies the assemblies involved, and asks a short follow-up only when something genuinely changes the answer — thickness, reinforcement, or whether the base is included.

The math it runs is the standard site arithmetic you would otherwise do on a scrap of plywood. Volume in cubic yards is length × width × (inches ÷ 12) ÷ 27. Feet-and-inches convert to decimal by dividing the inches by 12, so 12 ft 7 in is 12.583 ft — the conversion most people fumble in their head. Areas divide by unit coverage, and spaced members follow (span ÷ spacing) + 1.

Always sanity-check a spoken result before ordering, because dictation misreads numbers more often than words: "fifteen" and "fifty" are the classic pair, and "four inches" can come through as "forty inches". The planner shows every input it used and every step of the arithmetic specifically so a wrong number is visible at a glance rather than buried in a total.
