The manual math behind the answer
Excavation starts with bank volume — the soil measured in place, before it is disturbed. Multiply length × width × depth in feet and divide by 27 for cubic yards. A 30 ft × 40 ft basement dug 8 ft deep is 30 × 40 × 8 = 9,600 ft³, or 355.6 cubic yards.
Add the working space. You cannot build a foundation wall in a hole exactly the size of the wall, so excavations are typically over-dug 2 ft on each side for forms and drainage, and the sides are battered back for stability in anything but solid rock. Adding 2 ft all round makes the hole 34 × 44 × 8 = 11,968 ft³, or 443 cubic yards — 25% more than the naive number.
Now apply the swell factor, the reason excavation estimates surprise people. Loose soil occupies more space than the same soil in the ground: sand and gravel swell about 12–15%, common loam about 25%, dense clay 30–40%, and blasted rock 50% or more. Our 443 bank yards of clay becomes 443 × 1.30 = 576 loose cubic yards of spoil to move.
Convert to truck loads. A standard tandem dump truck carries 10–14 cubic yards; a tri-axle 15–18. At 12 yards per load, 576 loose yards is 48 loads. If some spoil is being kept on site for backfill and grading, subtract it in bank yards before swelling — backfill compacts back down to roughly its original in-place volume, at about a 10–15% shrink from loose.
Two things that change the number more than the arithmetic does: groundwater, which may require dewatering and turns clay spoil into something no one wants delivered, and unexpected rock or buried debris. Call for utility locates before any dig, check the local requirements for shoring or sloping on excavations deeper than 5 ft, and keep the spoil pile at least 2 ft back from the edge of the excavation.
