10 Kitchen Remodel Mistakes to Avoid in 2026

What pros wish homeowners knew before demo day — from layout errors to appliance timing.

1. Starting demo before appliances arrive

Appliance lead times in 2026 are still 4–14 weeks for premium brands. If cabinets get built to a spec sheet and the fridge model changes at delivery, you'll pay for scribe fillers, new panels, or worse — a rebuild. Confirm every appliance in-hand before final cabinet cut lists.

2. Under-lighting the workspace

Recessed cans alone create shadows on every countertop task. Layer three sources: general (cans or a flush mount), task (under-cabinet LED strips at 350+ lumens per foot), and accent (toe-kick or interior cabinet lighting). This is a $600–$1,200 upgrade that transforms daily use.

3. Skimping on the range hood

A 400 CFM hood over a 36" gas range is undersized. You want 600–900 CFM with a proper make-up air solution in tight modern homes. Grease and moisture that don't get vented end up in your cabinets and drywall.

4. Choosing trend colors on permanent surfaces

Put the trend on paint, hardware, textiles and lighting — things you can swap in a weekend. Keep countertops, cabinet boxes and flooring in timeless neutrals. A $9,000 emerald-green quartz island feels dated fast.

5. Forgetting the 15% contingency

Even well-scoped remodels hit surprises: outdated wiring, rotten subfloor, or an out-of-square wall that eats an extra day of tile. Hold 15% (20% for homes built pre-1985) in reserve and don't spend it on upgrades.
