Why quartz keeps winning
Modern quartz (Caesarstone, Silestone, Cambria) is 93% crushed quartz + resin binders. It's harder than granite, doesn't need sealing, and comes in book-matched slabs for waterfall islands. The only real drawback: it can discolor from direct heat above 300°F — always use trivets.
When to pick granite anyway
You want a truly one-of-a-kind slab and don't mind resealing once a year. Exotic granites (Blue Bahia, Fusion) still have visual character quartz can't match.
Marble — know what you're signing up for
Honed Carrara marble in a butler's pantry or half-bath is timeless. In a working kitchen it will etch, stain, and patina within 6 months. Some buyers love it; most don't.
