How to Install Vinyl Plank Flooring (Floating)
Click-lock LVP install over concrete, plywood or existing floors — DIY-friendly.
- • Utility knife
- • Speed square
- • Rubber mallet
- • Pull bar
- • Spacers
- • LVP with attached pad (preferred) or separate underlayment
- • 1/4" spacers
- • Transition strips
- • Quarter round
Step-by-step
- 1
Acclimate 48 hours
Leave sealed boxes flat in the room for 48 hours at normal living temperature. Skip this and you'll get gaps.
- 2
Prep the subfloor
Flat within 3/16" over 10 ft. Grind high spots on concrete, self-level low spots. Vacuum thoroughly.
- 3
Plan the layout
Measure room, calculate how narrow the last row will be. If under 2", rip the first row narrower to balance.
- 4
First row
Start against the longest, straightest wall. Cut the tongue off the wall-side edge. Maintain 1/4" expansion gap with spacers.
- 5
Stagger seams
Cut the first plank of each new row to a different length — minimum 8" offset — to avoid an H-pattern. Save cut ends to start the next row.
- 6
Final row
Rip lengthwise to fit, minus 1/4" for expansion. Use the pull bar to snug the last row into place.
