How to Install a Bathroom Vanity

Freestanding or wall-mount vanity replacement — with plumbing tie-ins.

Tools needed

• Level
• Drill/driver
• Adjustable wrench
• Stud finder
• Caulk gun

Materials

• Vanity + top
• Faucet
• P-trap kit
• Supply lines
• Silicone caulk
• Wall anchors

Turn off water and remove old vanity
Shut supply valves, disconnect P-trap and supplies, unscrew the old vanity from the wall.

Dry-fit new vanity
Position new vanity, level shim as needed. Mark stud locations behind the vanity for mounting screws.

Cut plumbing openings if needed
Trace supply and drain locations on the back of the vanity, cut clearance with a hole saw.

Anchor to studs
Drive 3" screws through the vanity back into studs. If no studs align, use toggle bolts rated for the vanity + top weight.

Install top, faucet and drain
Set the top in a bead of silicone. Install faucet and drain assembly BEFORE dropping the top if it's a solid piece (much easier).

Connect plumbing and caulk
Attach supply lines and P-trap. Run water 5 minutes, check for leaks. Caulk the top-to-wall joint with mildew-resistant silicone.
