How to Calculate Cement Bags for 1,000 Sq Ft (Slab, Plaster and Masonry)

The volume-to-bag method worked through for a slab, wall plaster and block mortar — with the mix-ratio table and the mistakes that double your order.

The method in four steps

Cement is never estimated by area alone — area plus thickness gives volume, and volume plus mix ratio gives cement. The same four steps work for a slab, a plaster coat or mortar.

  • 1. Wet volume = area x thickness (convert thickness to the same unit as area)
  • 2. Dry volume = wet volume x 1.54 for concrete, or x 1.30–1.33 for mortar and plaster
  • 3. Cement volume = dry volume x (cement part ÷ sum of all parts)
  • 4. Bags = cement volume ÷ bag yield (1.25 cu ft per 94 lb bag, or 0.0347 m³ per 50 kg bag)

Worked example 1 — 1,000 sq ft slab, 4 in thick

Wet volume = 1,000 sq ft x 0.333 ft = 333 cu ft (12.34 cu yd). Dry volume = 333 x 1.54 = 513 cu ft. For a 1:2:4 nominal mix, cement is 1 of 7 parts, so cement volume = 513 ÷ 7 = 73.3 cu ft. Bags = 73.3 ÷ 1.25 = about 59 bags of 94 lb, or 133 bags of 50 kg by the metric equivalent.

For most slabs you should also cost the ready-mix alternative: 12.34 cubic yards is well past the point where site mixing is slower, less consistent and rarely cheaper.

1,000 sq ft area, nominal 1:2:4 mix, before waste allowance. Add 5–10% for spillage and uneven subgrade.

Worked example 2 — 1,000 sq ft of plaster, 1/2 in thick

Wet volume = 1,000 x 0.0417 ft = 41.7 cu ft. Dry volume = 41.7 x 1.30 = 54.2 cu ft. For a 1:4 cement-sand plaster, cement is 1 of 5 parts: 54.2 ÷ 5 = 10.8 cu ft, or about 9 bags of 94 lb. A 1:6 mix on the same area drops it to about 6 bags.

Worked example 3 — mortar for 1,000 sq ft of blockwork

Mortar volume for standard 8-inch concrete block with 3/8 in joints runs roughly 0.02–0.03 cu ft per sq ft of wall, so 1,000 sq ft needs about 20–30 cu ft of mortar. Dry volume at x1.33 is 27–40 cu ft; at a 1:5 mix that is 5.4–8 cu ft of cement, or roughly 5–7 bags of 94 lb.

Blockwork mortar varies more than any other line because joint thickness and unit type drive it. Measure your actual block size and joint spec before ordering.

Mix ratio reference

Nominal ratios still used for small works. Structural concrete should be specified by strength class and mix design, not by nominal ratio.

Cement : sand : aggregate by volume. Confirm the specified mix with your engineer or the project drawings.

Five mistakes that wreck the estimate

Each of these shows up constantly in DIY estimates:

  • Multiplying by inches instead of converting to feet (4 instead of 0.333)
  • Skipping the dry-volume factor and under-ordering by about a third
  • Using bag weight instead of bag yield — weight is not volume
  • Mixing metric and imperial mid-calculation
  • Forgetting waste, over-dig and thickness variation on an uneven subgrade
