How to Add Attic Insulation the Right Way

Air sealing first, baffles at the eaves, correct R-value by climate zone and how to add blown-in over existing batts.

Step-by-step

    Air seal before you insulate

    Insulation slows heat conduction; it does not stop air movement. Every top-plate gap, wire penetration, plumbing chase, recessed light and bath fan is a hole between conditioned space and the attic. Seal them with fire-block caulk, canned foam or rigid foam before adding a single inch of insulation — this is where most of the actual savings come from.

    Handle the tricky penetrations

    Chimneys and flues need a metal collar and high-temperature sealant, not foam. Non-IC-rated recessed lights need a clearance box or replacement with IC-rated fixtures. Bath fans must vent through the roof or gable wall to the outside — never into the attic.

    Install eave baffles

    Staple a baffle in each rafter bay at the eaves so soffit vents stay clear. Blocked soffit venting causes ice dams in cold climates and cooks shingles in hot ones. Do this before insulating; you cannot reach the eaves afterward.

    Check what is already there

    Measure existing depth and identify the material. If existing batts are dry, in good condition and lie flat, blow over the top of them. If they are compressed, damp, rodent-damaged or vermiculite (which may contain asbestos and requires professional testing), stop and get it assessed.

    Pick your target R-value

    Climate zones 1–2 target roughly R-30 to R-49; zones 3–4 target R-38 to R-60; zones 5–8 target R-49 to R-60. Blown cellulose is about R-3.5 per inch and blown fiberglass about R-2.5 per inch, so R-49 is roughly 14 inches of cellulose or 20 inches of fiberglass.

    Set depth markers and insulate the hatch

    Staple depth rulers to trusses every 300 sq ft so you can verify coverage as you go. Build an insulated, weatherstripped box or dam for the attic hatch — an uninsulated hatch can leak more heat than a whole wall.

    Blow evenly, working backward

    Start at the far corners and work back toward the hatch so you never stand where you have insulated. Keep the depth uniform; a low spot loses heat far out of proportion to its area. Do not compress the material — loft is what makes R-value.

    Verify and document

    Walk the perimeter with a light to confirm eaves are not blocked and depth is consistent. Photograph the finished depth and markers — utilities and rebate programs frequently require before-and-after evidence.
