Tools needed
  • Drill/driver
  • Level
  • Tape measure
  • Hacksaw
Materials
  • Storm door kit (matched to opening)
  • Screws (included)
  • Silicone caulk
  1. 1

    Measure the opening

Height and width to the nearest 1/8". Storm doors are typically sold in standard 32", 34", 36" widths — buy the closest and trim if needed.

  2. 2

    Attach the hinge-side Z-bar

Determine hinge side (usually opposite the entry door hinge). Level the Z-bar plumb, drill pilot holes, screw to the door frame with the included screws.

  3. 3

    Hang the door

Slide door onto the hinge-side Z-bar. Confirm it swings and closes cleanly.

  4. 4

    Install top and latch-side Z-bars

Cut to length with a hacksaw, position with a consistent 1/8" gap around the door edge, screw home.

  5. 5

    Install closer and sweep

Attach hydraulic closer (arm attaches to Z-bar and door), install bottom sweep, adjust closer speed with the end-cap screw.
