How to Install a Ceiling Fan

Replace a light fixture with a code-compliant ceiling fan in under 2 hours.

Tools needed

• Voltage tester
• Screwdriver set
• Wire nuts
• Step ladder
• Drill

Materials

• Ceiling fan kit
• Fan-rated ceiling box (if not already installed)
• Wire nuts
• Electrical tape

Kill power
Turn off the breaker for the circuit and verify with a non-contact voltage tester at the box.

Verify the box is fan-rated
Standard light boxes are NOT rated for the vibration and weight of a fan. Replace with a fan-rated box (marked 'Acceptable for Fan Support' up to 70 lbs).

Assemble the fan on the ground
Attach the mounting bracket to the ceiling box, then pre-assemble the motor housing and downrod per the manufacturer instructions.

Wire it up
Black to black (fan motor), blue to black or separate switch (light kit), white to white, green/bare to ground. Cap with wire nuts and wrap with electrical tape.

Mount and balance
Hang the motor from the bracket, secure the canopy, attach blades. Run at high speed — if it wobbles, use the included balancing kit on the top of a blade.
