PVC vs PPR Pipes: Which Should You Use, and Where
Temperature limits, pressure ratings, jointing method, cost and failure modes — a practical comparison for real plumbing decisions.
The one-line answer
PVC is a cold-water and drainage material joined with solvent cement. PPR (polypropylene random copolymer) is a hot-and-cold pressure material joined by heat fusion. If the line carries hot water under pressure, PVC is the wrong choice — that is the decision, and most other differences are secondary.

How each one typically fails
PVC failures cluster around joints: insufficient cement, dry-fit, no primer where required, or a joint stressed before it cured. It also becomes brittle with UV exposure and cannot tolerate hot discharge on a pressure line.
PPR failures are usually fusion errors — wrong heat time, dirty pipe end, or pipe pushed too deep and choking the bore. A correctly fused PPR joint is effectively as strong as the pipe itself.
Cost is not the deciding factor
PPR pipe and fittings cost more per meter and need a fusion tool, but on a hot-water system the comparison is not PVC vs PPR — it is PPR vs CPVC, PEX or copper. Choosing PVC to save money on a hot line is a code and safety problem, not a saving.
- Cold supply, drainage, irrigation: PVC is usually the economical, code-accepted answer
- Hot and cold potable distribution: PPR, CPVC or PEX depending on local practice
- Retrofit into occupied buildings: PEX often wins on labour, not material cost
Check your code before you buy
Accepted materials differ by jurisdiction. PPR is widely used across the Middle East, Europe and Asia, while much of the USA defaults to PEX, CPVC or copper for hot supply. Confirm what your local plumbing code and inspector accept, and have pressure piping installed or verified by a licensed plumber.
