How to Measure a Roof for Shingles: Bundles and Squares Explained

The vocabulary you need first

A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface. Every roofing material, labor bid and dumpster quote in the USA is priced per square, not per square foot.

Architectural (laminated) shingles are packaged three bundles per square. Heavier designer shingles run four or five bundles per square. Always confirm the bundle count printed on the wrapper before ordering.

Step 1 — Measure the footprint, not the slope

You rarely need to walk the roof. Measure the building footprint on the ground, including eave and rake overhangs, and break the shape into rectangles. A 40 ft x 30 ft ranch with 1 ft overhangs all around measures 42 x 32 = 1,344 square feet of horizontal projection.

Step 2 — Apply the pitch multiplier

Roof pitch is expressed as rise over 12 inches of run. A steeper roof has more surface area over the same footprint, and the multiplier converts between them:

Step 3 — Convert to squares and bundles

Take the pitch-adjusted area, divide by 100 for squares, then add waste. Use 10% on a simple gable and 15% on a hip roof or anything with multiple valleys and dormers.

Our 6/12 example: 1,503 sq ft x 1.10 = 1,653 sq ft = 16.53 squares, round up to 17 squares = 51 bundles of architectural shingles.

Step 4 — Accessories nobody budgets for

Shingles are only about 60% of the material order. Add these per the same roof:

• Underlayment: synthetic, 10 squares per roll — 2 rolls for 17 squares
• Ice and water shield: 3 ft up from every eave in freeze zones, plus all valleys
• Starter strip: linear feet of all eaves and rakes
• Hip and ridge cap: linear feet of ridges and hips, ~25 lin ft per bundle
• Drip edge: linear feet of eaves and rakes, 10 ft pieces
• Roofing nails: 320 nails (about 2.5 lbs) per square with 4-nail pattern; 6 nails in high wind zones
• Pipe boots, step flashing, and ridge vent by the linear foot

When to hire a measurement service

Aerial measurement reports (EagleView, Hover) cost $20–$40 and return exact facet areas, pitches, ridge, hip and valley lengths. For any roof with more than four facets, that is money well spent — a 5% measurement error on a 30-square roof is worth more than the report.
