- Engineered wood (LP SmartSide): $8–$14

Fiber cement is the modern default
Hardie Plank lasts 40+ years, resists insects and fire, and holds paint 15+ years. The upfront premium over vinyl is 40–70% but the lifetime cost is lower.
Don't forget the wrap
New house wrap ($0.60/sq ft installed), flashing at every window and door, and rain-screen furring in wet climates. Skimping here causes rot within 5–7 years.
