Gutter Cost and Sizing Guide 2026: K-Style, Half-Round and Downspouts
How to size gutters to your roof area and rainfall intensity, plus 2026 installed pricing for aluminum, steel, copper and seamless systems.
Undersized gutters are the most common exterior defect
Most American homes are fitted with 5-inch K-style gutters by default, regardless of roof area, pitch or local rainfall. On a steep, large roof in a high-intensity rainfall region, 5-inch gutters overshoot in every heavy storm, and the water goes straight to the foundation.
Sizing is a calculation, not a default. It takes three inputs: roof drainage area, roof pitch factor, and the local 5-minute rainfall intensity.
Step 1 — adjusted roof area
Take the horizontal footprint each gutter run drains, then apply a pitch factor to account for wind-driven rain hitting a sloped surface.

Step 2 — match capacity to gutter size
Compare the adjusted area against the maximum area each gutter profile can handle at a typical 1/16 inch per foot slope. Regions with intense downpours (Gulf Coast, Florida, the Southeast) should use the lower end of each range.

Downspouts and discharge matter more than the gutter
A correctly sized gutter that dumps at the foundation has solved nothing. Discharge should carry water at least 6 feet from the wall — 10 feet is better — via an extension, splash block run or buried solid pipe to daylight.
Never connect roof drainage to a perforated foundation drain. It floods the exact system meant to keep water away from the footing.
- One downspout per 30–40 ft of gutter, minimum two per run
- Discharge 6–10 ft from the foundation
- Buried lines use solid pipe, not perforated
- Slope gutters 1/16 in per foot toward the downspout
