Electrical Panel Upgrade Cost 2026: 100A to 200A and Beyond
What a service upgrade really costs in 2026, when code forces one, and how EV chargers, heat pumps and induction ranges change the math.
Why 2026 is the year panels became a bottleneck
Electrification is running into 1970s service capacity. A single Level 2 EV charger wants a 40–60A circuit. A cold-climate heat pump wants 30–50A. An induction range wants 40A. A heat-pump water heater wants 30A. Stack two of those on a 100A service and the load calculation fails before anything is installed.
That is why panel upgrades are now the most common electrical job in American homes, and why the quote often arrives attached to a project that had nothing to do with electricity.

Do you actually need 200A? Run the load calculation
Code uses a standard load calculation rather than a guess. In simplified form: 3 VA per square foot of living area for general lighting and receptacles, plus 1,500 VA for each small-appliance and laundry circuit, plus the nameplate rating of every fixed appliance, with demand factors applied.
A 2,000 sq ft home with gas heat, gas range and gas water heater often calculates under 100A. The same house all-electric with an EV charger calculates 150–200A. An electrician does this calculation on paper before quoting — ask to see it.
- Gas-heated 1,500–2,500 sq ft home, no EV: 100A is usually adequate
- All-electric home or any Level 2 EV charger: plan on 200A
- Two EVs, heat pump and shop equipment: 200A tight, 400A comfortable
Cheaper alternatives to a full upgrade
A service upgrade is not always the answer. Smart panels and load-management devices let a 100A service host an EV charger by shedding the charger when other large loads run — typically $500–$1,500 installed versus $3,000+ for an upgrade. Circuit-sharing devices do the same for a dryer and charger on one circuit.
If the panel is healthy and only the breaker slots are gone, a sub-panel adds capacity for a fraction of a service upgrade.
Panels that should be replaced regardless of capacity
Some panels are a known hazard and insurers increasingly refuse to write policies on them. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok, Zinsco/Sylvania-Zinsco, Challenger and split-bus panels with no single main disconnect all fall in this category. If you have one, the replacement cost is not a capacity decision — it is a safety and insurability one.
Rebates and tax credits in 2026
Federal and state incentive programs have repeatedly targeted panel upgrades performed as part of an electrification project — heat pump, heat-pump water heater or EV charger. Amounts, caps and eligibility change frequently and vary by state and utility, so confirm current terms with your utility and a tax professional before counting on them in your budget.
