Driveway Cost Comparison 2026: Gravel vs Asphalt vs Concrete vs Pavers
Installed cost, lifespan, maintenance schedule and 30-year total cost of ownership for the four common driveway surfaces.
Install price is the smaller half of the decision
Gravel is a quarter the price of concrete to install and three times the maintenance over 30 years. Asphalt is cheap up front and needs sealing every 3–5 years. Pavers cost the most and are the only surface you can repair invisibly, one unit at a time.
Size the comparison to a real driveway: 20 x 30 ft (600 sq ft) is a standard two-car driveway, and every figure below uses that as the reference.

30-year total cost of ownership
Adding maintenance and one mid-life repair changes the ranking. This model uses the typical column, national average labor, and assumes no catastrophic base failure.

Climate is the tiebreaker
In freeze-thaw climates, concrete needs air entrainment and control joints, and de-icing salt on young concrete causes scaling — do not salt a slab in its first winter. Asphalt stays flexible in cold and is forgiving of frost heave, which is why it dominates the northern half of the country.
In hot climates, asphalt softens and rutts under parked vehicle tires in high summer, and dark surfaces radiate heat into the house. Concrete and light-colored pavers are the better choice below the 35th parallel.
- Freeze-thaw north: asphalt or air-entrained concrete with proper joints
- Hot south: concrete or light pavers; avoid asphalt in full sun
- Steep slope: asphalt or concrete — gravel migrates downhill
- Poor drainage or stormwater rules: permeable pavers may be required
Base preparation decides whether any of it lasts
Every driveway failure traced back far enough is a base failure. Plan on 4–8 inches of compacted crushed aggregate over undisturbed or properly compacted subgrade, more in clay soils and cold climates. Compaction must be done in 2–3 inch lifts; a contractor who dumps 8 inches and runs a plate compactor over the top has not compacted anything below the top three.
Any bid that does not state base depth and compaction method in writing is not comparable to one that does.
