Contractor availability, material pricing and weather windows — when to schedule each type of project.
The seasonality nobody tells you about
Contractors are 20–35% cheaper in January and February across most of the USA because demand collapses after the holidays. Interior projects (kitchens, baths, flooring, painting) are ideal in winter — the crew is hungry, materials aren't back-ordered, and permits move fast.
Spring (March–May) is the worst time to start large remodels. Every homeowner calls at once, quotes inflate 10–20%, and your job sits in a queue behind exterior work.
Best month per project type
A rough scheduling guide based on 2020–2025 bid data:
- Kitchen / bathroom remodel: January–February
- Roof replacement: late September–October (post-summer, pre-storm season)
- Deck / fence build: February booking, March–April install
- HVAC replacement: shoulder seasons (April, October)
- Windows and siding: October–November
- Concrete driveway: May or September (avoid freeze/thaw and 90°F+ pours)
What about rebates?
Federal 25C credits refresh January 1. States like NY, CA, MA and CO run heat pump and insulation rebates that reset with the fiscal year in July. Stack a January install with a July-effective rebate carefully — some require post-install applications within 90 days.
